When Steve Jobs was trying to head hunt John Scully from Pepsi, he said:

“Do you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life or come with me and change the world?”

Ambition is a great gift from God, but as with many gifts our sin messes with it.  Our sin ‘short-circuits’ it.  Our ambition is supposed to be wired back into God – honouring him the one who made us and loves us.  But instead, sin wires it back into us, we become centre, we are the thing everything revolves around and so like a short-circuit, our ambitions spark and get frazzled.

Ambition can get frazzled in one of two ways…

1. Selfish Ambition – With ‘ME’ at the centre, all that drive and purpose that should have been aimed at God’s glory is now for my glory.  You will know these people, they are driven, they push hard and if you get in their way they will walk over the top of you.

2. No Ambition – With ‘ME’ at the centre, sometimes all of that drive and purpose just dries up.  Why drive hard through life? Just take the easy route, enjoy life, take it easy.  You will know these people, they coast through life, no pushing, not driving, just coasting.

We will all have a bent towards one of these. They may look like opposites, but they are just two sides of the same coin.  The coin that has ‘ME’ at the centre.  There is a third way and that is to Rewire our ambition back into God.

3. Re:Wire Ambition – This is to take ‘ME’ out of the centre and put Christ back where he belongs.  To pour out our lives, pushing and driving to see ‘HIS’ name honoured.

That is the ambition that the Apostle Paul had:

“It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known…” Romans 15:20

An ambition and drive that pushes hard for the honour of Jesus Christ.  Ambition is not something Christians need to be afraid of, it is something we need to Re:Wire.
